Razzaq’s miraculous batting steers Pak to win

Razzaq's miraculous batting steers Pak to win

ABU DHABI: Woken-up Abdul Razzaq hit a belligerent unbeaten hundred to help Pakistan pull off an incredible win in the second one-day international against South Africa here on Sunday.

The dashing 30-year-old all-rounder hit a quick fire 109 off just 72 balls studded with ten towering sixes and seven fours to help Pakistan overhaul a daunting 288-run target with just one wicket and one delivery to spare.

Razzaq's third one-day hundred -- crossing the fifty mark for the first time since making 75 not out against England four years ago -- helped Pakistan level the five-match series 1-1 at the Abu Dhabi Stadium.

South Africa won the first match by eight wickets here on Friday. The third match will be played in Dubai on Tuesday.

Razzaq, who came to the crease at 5-136, added 81 for the sixth wicket with Fawad Alam (48) to raise hopes of Pakistan win and even after Alam fell, he did not lose heart despite Pakistan needing 87 in the last ten overs.

He hit Charl Langeveldt for three sixes in 47th over before taking a six and a boundary off the same bowler in the 49th.

Pakistan needed 14 off the last over as Razzaq cut loose, hitting sixes off the second and third balls from Albie Morkel to raise his third hundred in one-day cricket, which came off just 70 balls.

He then cut through the point for boundary to bring Pakistan's win.

Langeveldt, who completed his 100 wickets in the match, provided his team with early breakthroughs, removing opener Asad Shafiq (one) and Younis Khan for 18.

Pakistan struggled to 70-4 before Alam and skipper Shahid Afridi (49) added 66 for the fifth wicket to lift the stuttering innings. Afridi hit two sixes
and three boundaries off 40 balls before passing the buck to Razzaq.

Man-of-the-match Razzaq said he was happy to play lead role in the victory.

"I am elated," he said after the match. "I am sure this win will lift our morale which was down after Twenty20 series defeat and first one-day loss.

"I thought the match turned South Africa's way when we lost the eighth wicket and it became a game of fours and sixes. I am happy that I am able to
hit those. It is the best innings of my career."

Earlier, the 25-year-old Ingram scored exactly 100 for his second century in three weeks after achieving hundred on debut at home against Zimbabwe just two weeks ago.

The left-hander put on 84 for the second wicket with opener Amla (65) and then another 86 for the third wicket with AB de Villiers (29) as Pakistan bowlers found it hard to put brakes on the South African innings.

Jean-Paul Duminy chipped in with a swift 43-ball 54.

Graeme Smith, who missed the match along with Jacques Kallis due to injury, praised Razzaq.

"We were in a position to shut the match close and it needed a massive individual effort to turn the tables which Razzaq did," said Smith.

It was Ingram who built the innings, hitting ten boundaries and a six off paceman Razzaq before he was trapped leg-before by fast bowler Wahab Riaz who replaced Umar Gul in the Pakistan squad for the only change. He faced 119 balls.

Amla started the run feast with three boundaries in paceman Shoaib Akhtar's first over of the match, before fellow opener Robin Peterson fell leg-before to Razzaq in the fourth over.

Ingram then took charge and in company of Amla took the score to 108.

Pakistan broke through captain Shahid Afridi who trapped Amla leg-before. The bearded opener hit eight boundaries off 62 balls.

Duminy's knock contained three fours and a six before he fell in the last over.

Pakistan can improve World Cup chances, says Afridi

Karachi, Oct 19 : Skipper Shahid Afridi wants Pakistan to put its preparations for World Cup 2011 back on track by winning the forthcoming one-day series against South Africa in United Arab Emirates (UAE) next month.

The 1992 champions find their cricket in a mess just five months before the World Cup gets under way in Dhaka and will need to really work hard in the lead up to the quadrennial spectacle if they are to be counted among the leading title contenders.

Three of their key players are under suspension because of their alleged role in a match-fixing scandal while the country's cricket chiefs have been told by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to put their house in order within 30 days or face sanctions.

To say that Pakistan cricket is going through a difficult phase would be an understatement. However, Afridi, the man who will lead them in the World Cup, believes that his team can still go on to win the world crown in the final in Mumbai next April.

His mantra is simple.

Afridi wants his boys to gel together and pick up as many wins as possible ahead of the World Cup to boost their confidence.

"It's all about confidence," he said Tuesday. "We can improve our World Cup chances by boosting our confidence and should do that by winning matches against South Africa and later against New Zealand," he said.

Pakistan will play two twenty20 Internationals against South Africa in Dubai later this month before taking on the Proteas in a five-match One-day International series in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The limited-overs matches will be followed by two Tests before the Pakistanis fly for New Zealand to play a full series, including T20 games, ODIs and Tests.

Afridi is hoping that his team will make the most of the twin assignments in the UAE and New Zealand.

He wants Pakistan to put aside the bitter memories of an acrimonious tour of England and give their best against South Africa.

"We have to forget what happened during the tour of England," said Afridi. "What the team desperately needs is some good results and I'm sure that if we play to our potential we can do that against South Africa."

Pakistan lost to England in all three formats (3-1 in Tests, 3-2 in ODIs and 2-0 in T20s) during a marathon tour of England that also included a series against Australia.

Much more damaging for them was a 'match-fixing' scandal that resulted in the ICC suspending Test captain Salman Butt and pace spearheads Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir following allegations that they accepted bribes from match-fixers.

Pakistan will be without the tainted trio in the UAE and Afridi said that he and his team will certainly miss them.

"We are going to miss the three because they are our key players," he stressed. "But we can't just sit back and cry over it. We have to focus on the upcoming assignments and, thankfully, we still have several match-winners in our side."

Afridi is confident that Pakistan's spin attack will give the 'hosts' an edge on slow and turning wickets in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

"Spinners will certainly be playing the major role in UAE," said Afridi, himself an accomplished leg-spinner. "The wickets there should give them a lot of assistance."

Zulqarnain Haider suffers fractured finger

Zulqarnain Haider is in danger of missing the remainder of the Test series due to a finger injury that could have been aggravated when Stuart Broad hurled a ball back at him in frustration during the second Test at Edgbaston. Haider is scheduled to meet a finger specialist when the team reaches London on Sunday and the team management will take a call - whether to send him back or retain him - based on the diagnosis.
"He picked up a hairline fracture to his little finger. We don't know yet if he will stay but we will wait to hear from the specialist," Yawar Saeed, Pakistan's manager told Cricinfo.
It is believed that Haider started experiencing pain after being hit on his hand by Broad. Having stopped the ball in his follow through, Broad had thrown the ball back at Haider, who raised his hand to shield himself but was hit on the little finger. The incident happened on the third day of the Edgbaston Test during the second session when Haider and Mohammad Amir were involved in an inspired stonewalling effort. Broad, who admitted his fault, was fined half his match fee by Ranjan Madugalle, the ICC match referee.

Haider, on the verge of earning the unwanted honour of getting a king pair on debut, went on to make a resolute 88 which injected some steel into an otherwise deflated Pakistan batting. He had first hurt his little finger at a practice session at Leeds during the Australia series, and the pain resurfaced on the eve of the second day of the tour game against Worcestershire at New Road. Another team source told Cricinfo that Haider is all but set to return home soon. "The doctor has said that he [Haider] will take one month to heal with or without operation. So he is bound to be out of the series," the official said.
Haider complained of pain and subsequent X-rays at a local hospital in Worcester revealed a minor fracture to the bone in the finger, a step up from what was initially a minor injury. Haider was drafted into the team on the eve of the Edgbaston Test after the Pakistan team management felt their first-choice keeper Kamran Akmal needed to rest and sort out the mistakes he was committing with regularity. Akmal was struck on his right eye during practice on Friday and was holding an ice pack but is under no threat of missing out if called.
Haider gained fair points for his technical skills behind the stumps even if he failed to latch on to a couple of chances in the second innings.

Pakistani pacer Mohammad Irfan to play for KKR in IPL 2011

Mohammad Irfan, a left-arm medium pacer from Pakistan will be playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 4. Irfan who is about 7 feet tall is one of the tallest cricketers of all time. It was KKR bowling coach, Wasim Akram who recommended him to the KKR team. As he is not a Pakistan international, he doesn't need to go for auction and is signed directly by KKR.

Born in Gaggu Mand, a rural place in Eastern Pakistan, Irfan initially had to quit cricket to support his family. His talent brought him back to the game. At the age of 28 he is now knocking the doors of Pakistani team too as he was nearly selected for World T20 team.

Though he has been selected by KKR, he may need to be approved by various bodies like PCB. He may even need to get NOC from Pakistan government.

Sri Lanka Triangular Series: New Zealand Defeat India; Seal 200 Run Win

India’s series levelling win in the third and final Test match against Sri Lanka last week seems like eons ago, as the men in blue were thrashed by 200 runs in the opening match of the Sri Lanka Triangular Series by New Zealand at the Rangiri International stadium in Dambulla.

Batting first, the Black Caps recovered brilliantly from a dismal start to send the star-studded Indian line-up crashing to an ignominious defeat, which is one of the biggest in terms of runs in the 39 year history of the limited overs format.

The New Zealanders fielded a new look team led by Ross Taylor, who is captaining the team in the tournament as regular captain Daniel Vettori rests to recuperate from an injury.

The start was extremely poor for them, as Indian pacers Ashish Nehra and Praveen Kumar nipped out the first three batsmen with only 28 runs on the board.

The three batsmen who left back for the pavilion were Martin Guptill (11 off 6 balls), Peter Ingram (12 off 17 balls), and debutant KS Williamson, who was removed by a peach of a delivery by Praveen Kumar with the batsman yet to get off the mark.

At this juncture, the experienced duo of Ross Taylor and Scott Styris rescued the team with an intelligent batting display where caution was mixed with aggression.

The partnership for the fourth wicket was 190 runs, and was broken when Styris fell to a Pragyan Ojha delivery for 89 runs in a knock that included 9 fours and one six. Ross Taylor was dismissed soon afterwards, out lbw by Ashish Nehra; the right hander, regarded as the best New Zealand batsman in the current line-up, went five runs short of his century, having scored 95 off 113 balls with the help of 8 fours and one six.

The Black Caps were then helped by small but meaningful contributions from the lower half and tail-end batsmen, helping them reach a commanding total of 288 considering the tricky nature of the Dambulla wicket under lights, which are not rated amongst the best in the world.

For India, Nehra claimed four wickets while his new ball partner Praveen Kumar captured three Black Caps scalps. Yuvraj Singh and Pragyan Ojha took a wicket each.

The target of 289 runs was always going to be a challenging one for the Indians, considering the lateral movement that was available on the track under lights.

The New Zealand team was brilliantly served by their veteran pacer Daryl Tuffey, who was the star of the show, gaining exaggerated movement of the wicket at a decent pace and literally making the ball talk.

He removed the dangerous Dinesh Karthik early on (in the 8th over; he scored 14 runs off 20 balls) to rock the Indian ship before sending Rohit Sharma (4 off 11) and Suresh Raina (6 off 6 balls) back to the pavilion soon after.

He sealed the game for his team when he ran out the Indian captain MS Dhoni, who had attempted a risky single, leaving the men in blue tottering at 53/5 in the 14th over.

Tuffey was supported brilliantly by Kyle Mills and Jacob Oram, who accounted for two batsmen each, while the rest of the seam attack also made full use of the conditions.

Andy McKay and Kane Williamson captured one scalp each for the victors.

The much vaunted Indian batting line-up fell like a pack of cards for an embarrassing total of 88 runs inside 30 overs.

The top scorer for them was Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 20 off 44 balls, while Sehwag scored 19 runs.

New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor was named man of the match, and the batsman was beaming with joy after sending a fancied team like India to a dismal defeat with a team that was highly inexperienced in the ODI format. New Zealand won a bonus point for their superlative performance, and are now at 5 points, with a fantastic start to what is now looking to be a thrilling series.

Pakistan Lost 2nd Test by 9 Wickets

BIRMINGHAM (England): England captain Andrew Strauss survived being dropped three times to guide his team to a nine wicket win against Pakistan on the fourth day of the second Test at Edgbaston on Monday.

Scorecard

England, set 118 to win, finished on 118 for one as they went an unbeatable 2-0 up in this four-match series with more than a day to spare.

Opening batsman Strauss and Jonathan Trott were both 53 not out, with England winning their sixth Test in a row.

England had made just seven when Alastair Cook was clean bowled by left-arm quick Mohammad Aamer after a full length delivery kept low.

England could then have been 17 for two when off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, with only his third ball, induced an edge from Strauss, playing a forcing shot, on 10.

But debutant wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider, brought in after Kamran Akmal missed several chances and bagged a pair in Pakistan's 354-run first Test defeat at Trent Bridge, could not hold the tough catch with England then on 17 for one.

Zulqarnain then failed to hold a simpler chance off a defensive edge from Strauss, on 38, with Ajmal again the unlucky bowler.

Strauss, was on 43 when Mohammad Asif, running back at mid-off, failed to hold a skyer off Shoaib Malik but England were almost home.

Trott went to his second fifty of the match with a cover-driven four off Malik that levelled the scores before Strauss's inside-edged single off Ajmal ended the match.

Pakistan were earlier dismissed for 296, after resuming on 291 for nine, with Asif (14) caught in the gully by Kevin Pietersen off Stuart Broad.

Umar Gul, batting with a runner, was 13 not out. But Gul's hamstring injury meant the paceman was unable to bowl.

Zulqarnain, in on a king pair, top-scored with 88.

It represented a remarkable recovery after Pakistan made just 72 -- their lowest score against England -- in the first innings.

England off-spinner Graeme Swann took a Test-best six wickets for 65 runs.

Pakistan were all but beaten in this match on Friday when, for the second innings in a row, they were bowled out for a record low score against England after they made 80 at Trent Bridge.

Not since the 19th Century had a team been bowled out for 72 or fewer in their first innings and still won a Test.

Pakistan had added former captain Mohammad Yousuf to their squad following the first Test but chose not to play the experienced batsman after he only arrived in England on Thursday.

Pakistan captain Salman Butt opted to bat first in overcast conditions ideally suited to England's seamers.

James Anderson (four for 20) and Stuart Broad (four for 38) cashed in as Pakistan again struggled against the swinging ball.

England then made 251, thanks mainly to a third-wicket stand of 133 between South Africa-born batsmen Pietersen (80) and Trott (55).

Ajmal, recalled in place of leg-spinner Danish Kaneria, took five for 82.

But Pakistan were once more left lamenting their poor fielding after dropping six catches.

They collapsed to 82 for five in their second innings.

But Zulqarnain and Ajmal, whose 50 meant he returned Test-best figures with both bat and ball in the same match, added 115 for the eighth wicket as blue skies reduced England's swing threat.

Pakistan have a two-day match against Worcestershire starting on August 13 before the third Test gets underway at The Oval on August 18.

Sri Lanka Lost 3rd Test 7 August 2010

Start of India's second innings was not good and they lost too many wickets early but later on Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman  played well due to which India won the test match by 5 wickets. VVS Laxman scored 111 runs for Indian team in second innings. after this win the Test Series is drawn by 1-1.  VVS Laxman was declared man of the match for his amazing hundred in second innings. Pakistan 72/10 England 115/2 Second Test 6 August 2010

On Friday 6th August 2010 Second Test Between the Hosts England and Pakistan was started in Birmingham in which Pakistani team elected to bat first after winning the toss. The Decision of batting first was not proved to be a good one and Pakistani Batting was once again badly crushed by English bowlers and whole team was out on just 72 runs. it is the minimum total of Pakistani team in any test match. English Bowlers where getting lot of Pace and Young Pakistani batting line was not able to play it well and lost their wickets. James Anderson once again got 4 wickets for his team. Later on English team started its batting and scored 115 runs for loss of just 2 wickets in 38 overs at end of First day. Pakistani team has performed very poorly on day one and they will have to play well in upcoming days if they want to make a comeback in this test match otherwise England will get 2-0 Lead in the series.

ICB Indian Board Rejects Umpire Review system in Cricket

Indian Cricket Board has said that Umpire Review system in Cricket is not good and it must be ended.  Indian Cricket Board Chairman has said that we have talked to ICC about Umpire Review system and we think it is not a Suitable system so we want ICC to end it from Cricket Matches. He said if Umpire can do a mistake there also chances of mistake in this system. He said taking decision about LBW and Way of Bowl is really difficult. Umpire Review system is recently introduced in the Cricket in which a Player can go for Review to Third Umpire on decision of Umpire in Ground. This system is also used in ongoing Pakistan England Test Series. This system is also very Expensive and takes Millions of Rupees in one match. Some Cricket Boards including Indian Cricket Board are against this system while Some Boards are supporting it.
